    About the Position

    Reporting to the Chief Content Officer, the Executive Director leadsSourceMedia’s Research operation, with responsibility for planning, coordination, and execution of client-commissioned and proprietary Research projects from conception to content deliverable. In addition to responsibility for hands-on execution, the Executive Director must play a key role in driving overall Research strategy, including enabling the business line’s overall growth. To achieve these goals, the Executive Director will initially oversee a staff of three and work closely with Editorial, Marketing Services, and Conferences teams, and with senior leadership. Going forward, our intention is for the business line to grow and to play an increasingly important role across all products and services.

    Most of our Research today is client-commissioned, driven through Marketing Services, with a minority editorially-driven. The latter includes projects monetized through sponsorship and subscription sales. In the future, we expect the balance to shift – with more Research triggered by editorial insights, community panels and peer councils, and other applications designed to benefit end-users, including data products, benchmarks and other resources.

    The relationship between the Research team and the company’s editorial SMEs is a unique and important aspect of our approach. In cultivating this, we aim to unlock and exploit synergies that bring immediacy to and enrich the quality of our work. In particular, the Research team turns to the editorial team for subject-matter expertise necessary to execute its work, including design of studies and interpretation of results. The Executive Director often also playa marketer- or customer-facing role, understanding their needs, explaining capabilities, developing deliverables and presenting results.

    Responsibilities

    •In line with the company’s strategy and plan, execute and overseedevelopment of the Research and Research-based products and services SourceMedia takes to market•Contribute to development of Research strategyand development of new products and programs that fulfill the plan (see below)•Partner with the Content team on overall proprietary Research plan and execution of individual programs and projects (see below)•Partner with the Marketing Solutions team on overall go-to-market plan and execution of individual client engagements (see below)•Ensure the Research team has the tools and capabilities to deliver at the appropriate level of quality •Maintain appropriate cost structures and manage cost-effectiveness at the group and project levels•Oversee execution of all Research initiatives and projects, including:o Specification, design and execution of surveys; sample design, acquisition and incentives o Feasibility and suitability of surveys and survey projects o Quality control for all aspects of executiono Preparation of results for delivery in collaboration with editors and others as defined•To maximize success, the Executive Director must progressively build his or her knowledge of the subject matter the company covers and market sectors in which it builds communities 
    ROLE IN STRATEGY AND BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT
    •Play a key role in developing and expanding the company’s Research offerings in line with its mission to extend and deepen customer relationships across a broader range of business needs with a progressively more valuable array of interconnected offerings•Interact with colleagues across the company to incubate new ideas and products•Be an evangelist for SourceMedia’s Research business and capabilities– including:o Train sales and other staff and contribute to development of their productknowledgeo Build and maintain internal and external relationships to drive growth of the product line 
    ROLE IN CLIENT RESEARCH ENGAGEMENTS
    •Interact with existing and potential clients to translate business needs into Research deliverables•Partner with Marketing Services to manage and support sponsor and underwriter relationships•Provide consultative sales support – on and off site – as requested by the sales team •Contribute to development of– review for accuracy, professionalism, standards, feasibility –all research collaterals, prospectuses, proposals, and work product•As needed, meet prospects to define needs/requirements and help develop proposals, including project plans and budgets; deliver findings; and manage customer expectations/relationships 
    ROLE IN PROPRIETARY AND SUBSCRIPTIONRESEARCH
    •In partnership with Editorial and other teams, ensure the company has sufficient resources to fulfill its overall and specific commitments to proprietary Research for members and/or sponsors•With other members of Research team, enable delivery and participate in execution of ongoing Research commitments (studies, reports, dashboards, etc.), on time and at appropriate quality•Work with and/or train editorial staff to design and execute ad hoc and ongoing Research projects 
    ROLE IN DEVELOPING NEW BENCHMARK OFFERING
    •Working with leadership and partnering with other teams, develop plan for and design offerings to fulfill our strategic plan to introduce benchmarking data for members of professional communities•Initially leverage existing outputs, such as executive rankings and lists, to transform these into valued data resources that help companies and professionals track progress toward specified goals

    Qualifications

    • Bachelor's degree required; emphasis in Business, Marketing, or related quantitative field
    • Minimum five to ten years’ experience in market and marketing research and analysis, including in leadership roles, and ability to:
    • Assess business objectives to design and conduct quant, qualand hybrid surveys
    • Compile and analyze statistical data using current and traditional methods
    • Interpret data, build reports, identify insights, make recommendations to meet project goals
    • Evaluate program methodology and key data to ensure the research is accurate and current
    • Remain fully informed on Research trends and competitors, and implement best practices
    • Strong analytical skills, including expertise in the modeling and analysis of data
    • Two to five years’ direct or indirect management experience, including:
    • Ability to foster a collaborative, customer-oriented working environment
    • Ability to think strategically, delegate responsibility, listencarefully, build consensus and communicate and advocate effectively in a matrix organization
    • Demonstrated record of initiative, problem solving, and adaptability
    • Strong listening, communication, and collaboration skills
    • Comfortable working independently and have experience designing effective work-flow management policies.  The Director should develop staff and delegate responsibilities
    • Knowledge and ability to implement principles of management, leadership, conflict resolution, negotiation, and motivation
    • Technical and other skills, including:
    • Demonstrated expertise in market and customer research methodologies and knowledge of tools and techniques to capture, analyze, and compellingly deliver actionable insights
    • Ability to analyze data to draw both qualitative and quantitative conclusions
    • Experience with survey software tools, data visualization and analytics platforms, such as MarketSite and SPSS
    • Experience responding to RFPs and RFIs, creating proposals, prospectuses and statements of work, and creating presentations
    • Demonstrated written, verbal, presentation skills; ability to interact at all stakeholder levels
    • Statistical and mathematical ability; able to synthesize data from a wide variety of sources, skilled in analysis and reporting
    • All leaders must possess integrity, honesty and a sense of humor
